High-temperature labels, matched ribbons and thermal transfer printers, specified as one PCB labelling system

A PCB label has to survive more than the printer.

It may need to pass through SMT assembly, reflow, wave soldering, board wash, solvents and ESD-controlled handling. It may also need to carry a small barcode, QR code or Data Matrix code that remains readable throughout production.

If the label fails, traceability fails with it.

Zygology Systems helps electronics manufacturers specify the complete high-temperature labelling solution: the right label material, the right adhesive, the right thermal transfer ribbon and the right thermal transfer printer for your process.

Labels specified for the real manufacturing environment

Standard labels are not designed for PCB production.

Heat, soldering, flux, IPA, board wash chemicals, abrasion and handling can all expose weaknesses in the wrong material or ribbon. The result can be lifting labels, unreadable codes, rework, downtime or loss of traceability.

That is why we start with the application, not the roll size.

We help you consider:

  • Peak temperature and exposure time
  • Whether the label is applied before or after reflow
  • SMT and wave soldering requirements
  • Flux, IPA, solvent and board wash exposure
  • Board, component or housing surface
  • Label size and available space
  • Barcode, QR code or Data Matrix readability
  • ESD-safe or static dissipative requirements
  • In-house thermal transfer printing and production workflow

For many PCB traceability applications, a high-temperature polyimide label with a suitable resin thermal transfer ribbon is the right starting point. For other electronics applications, polyester, static dissipative materials, tamper-evident labels or component labels may be more appropriate.

The perfect labelling solution depends on your process.

The label is the star. The ribbon makes it work.

Zygology Systems specialises in thermal transfer printing.

For electronics manufacturing, the ribbon is not an accessory. It is part of the labelling system and part of the performance specification.

A reliable PCB labelling solution usually includes:

  • A specialist high-temperature label material
  • An adhesive suited to the surface and process
  • A thermal transfer printable topcoat
  • A matched resin, wax/resin or wax ribbon
  • A thermal transfer printer capable of sharp, reliable output
  • Artwork designed for real-world scan readability

A high-temperature label can still fail if the wrong ribbon is used. A small Data Matrix code can still become unreadable if the print quality is poor. A high-end thermal transfer printer cannot compensate for the wrong material.

We specify the label, ribbon and printer as one complete labelling system.

Small labels, sharp codes, reliable traceability

PCB space is limited. Traceability requirements are not.

We can help with small-format electronics labels carrying serial numbers, barcodes, QR codes and Data Matrix codes. Where required, 600 dpi thermal transfer printing can help produce sharper small text and denser codes, provided the material and ribbon are also correctly matched.

This is especially important for:

  • PCB traceability labels
  • SMT and reflow labels
  • High-temperature labels for soldering processes
  • Component identification
  • Serial number labels
  • QR code labels
  • Data Matrix labels
  • ESD-controlled production areas
  • Rating plates and asset labels
  • Cable and wire identification

If the code needs to scan after heat, cleaning and handling, the whole labelling system needs to be specified properly.

Printer examples: Brady i7100 and Zebra ZT610

The thermal transfer printer matters, but it comes after the label requirement.

For PCB and electronics labelling, the BradyPrinter i7100 and Zebra ZT610 are strong examples of industrial thermal transfer printers that can support demanding high-temperature label applications.

BradyPrinter i7100

The BradyPrinter i7100 is well suited to specialist electronics labelling, including high-temperature PCB labels, small labels, polyimide materials and high-resolution printing. The i7100 range also includes an ESD model, making it especially relevant for ESD-controlled electronics environments.

Zebra ZT610

The Zebra ZT610 is a robust industrial thermal transfer printer for high-volume manufacturing environments, with 600 dpi options and support for small labels, QR codes and Data Matrix codes.

Zygology Systems is a Premier Brady Distributor, as well as a Zebra Partner, TSC Partner, SATO Partner and GoDEX Partner.

That means we can recommend the right route for your application, not simply push one printer brand.

Why choose Zygology Systems?

Zygology Systems is a UK labelling specialist with decades of experience in industrial labels, thermal transfer printing, barcode labelling and application-specific identification.

We help electronics manufacturers avoid the common mistake of buying labels, ribbons or printers in isolation.

For PCB labelling, the complete system matters:

  • High-temperature label material
  • Adhesive
  • Thermal transfer ribbon
  • Thermal transfer printer
  • Software
  • Barcode or Data Matrix design
  • Testing and support

Our role is simple: understand your process, specify the right labelling system and help you keep production traceability reliable.

Quick questions

What labels are best for PCB manufacturing?

For high-temperature PCB processes, polyimide labels are often used because they are designed for demanding electronics manufacturing environments. The correct material depends on the temperature, process, surface, chemical exposure and traceability requirement.

Do high-temperature PCB labels need a special ribbon?

Yes. The ribbon must be matched to the label material and the application. Resin ribbons are commonly used where heat, solvent and abrasion resistance are required.

Can Zygology supply a full PCB labelling solution?

Yes. We can help specify and supply the label, adhesive, thermal transfer ribbon, thermal transfer printer and software setup for your electronics manufacturing process.
