For many PCB traceability applications, a high-temperature polyimide label with a suitable resin thermal transfer ribbon is the right starting point. For other electronics applications, polyester, static dissipative materials, tamper-evident labels or component labels may be more appropriate.

A high-temperature label can still fail if the wrong ribbon is used. A small Data Matrix code can still become unreadable if the print quality is poor. A high-end thermal transfer printer cannot compensate for the wrong material.

A PCB label has to survive more than the printer.

It may need to pass through SMT assembly, reflow, wave soldering, board wash, solvents and ESD-controlled handling. It may also need to carry a small barcode, QR code or Data Matrix code that remains readable throughout production.
